Sunsmart policy
Rationale
Australia has the highest rate of skin cancer in the world. It is estimated that practising sun protection in early childhood and adolescence could prevent more than 75% of all skin cancers.
Our SunSmart policy has been developed to ensure that all students and staff attending Mooroopna Secondary College are protected from overexposure to the harmful ultraviolet rays of the sun. This policy documents our sun protection practices in the areas of behaviour, curriculum and environment. These practices apply to all school activities including sports carnivals, excursions and camps.
Objectives
The goals of the SunSmart Policy are to:
- Increase student and community awareness of skin cancer.
- Assist students to develop strategies that encourage responsible decision making about skin protection.
- Work towards a safe school environment, which provides shade for students and staff.
- Encourage students, parents, teachers and staff to wear protective clothing, hats and sunscreen during high-risk times such as lunchtimes, sports, excursions and camps.
- Ensure that parents are informed of the school's SunSmart policy.

Evaluation
- Review the SunSmart behaviour of students, staff, parents and guests visiting the school.
- Assess the provision of shade in the school.
- Assess the use of shade by students and staff.
- Check plans for future buildings and grounds with regards to shade provision.
- Evaluate and update the SunSmart protection and skin cancer prevention component of the curriculum.
All students and staff must wear sun protective hats and clothing during recess, lunchtime and during sporting and other high-risk activities. A UV Meter has been purchased so that teachers and students are able to monitor days of extreme risk and incorporate this data as part of the SunSmart awareness in their curriculum programs. We provide sunscreen for students and staff to use.
A SunSmart hat has been included as part of the school uniform. Students must provide their own. Hats must be white, beige, navy, grey, black, maroon or dark green. A SunSmart straw hat is acceptable. The hat may have a brand name on it and an appropriate front logo is permitted. All students must have a SunSmart hat at school during Terms 1 and 4.
All students are to be protected from the sun during outdoor physical education and sport classes. On extreme days classes will avoid activities in the sun. Throughout Terms 1 and 4 all students must wear sun protective hats during outdoor activities and sunscreen will be provided.
Suitable hats, clothing and sunscreen are required for all camps and excursions. These items will be listed on the parent permission form.
Staff have a responsibility to model appropriate protection and should wear hats and use sunscreen whilst on duty or participating in outdoor class or sport activities.
Consideration should be given to sun protection for all teachers involved in outdoor activities including yard duty. Physical education and sport education teachers should be encouraged to take appropriate sun protection measures as they are particularly at risk from UV radiation.
Information related to sun protection and skin cancer prevention is included in KLA programs but specifically in Health, Physical Education, Science, Outdoor Education and Sport Education.
We encourage students to be actively involved in initiatives to protect the school community from over-exposure to the sun eg Forum Initiatives. Sun protection is promoted throughout the year via the school newsletter, assemblies, daily messages, parent and staff meetings and whole school activities.
The Buildings and Grounds Committee of Council monitors provision of shade within the school grounds for students and staff and responds to initiatives within the College development process.
Adequate shade and sun protection is an integral part of the planning for all sports carnivals held in Terms 1 and 4. This policy is monitored by the SunSmart Implementation Group comprising representatives of staff, students and College Council who will ensure:
The College Council in collaboration with the Student Representative Council reviews the effectiveness of this policy each year. They:
